It was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty-five-acre coconut property on the Mahaweli River. There are more than 73 elephants in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. En route visit Spice Garden in Mawanella and gain an insight into the long spice history of the Island. Pickers in light shirts and tightly curled turbans appear above the bushes before dropping down to pick more leaves. Visit Glenloch Tea Factory, Witness processing of pure Ceylon tea, Pinching the tea they place it in their baskets before it is transported to the factory. You follow the tea and head to the Glenloch or Bluefield Tea Factory where workers sort, select, and dry leaves in this slightly antiquated building, reminiscent of an imperial past. Seen from its southern bastions, the legendary hill of Rumassala is shrouded in myth and folklore due to its connection to the Hindu epic of the Ramayana. Stories aside, the coastal hill also hosts the pristine Japanese Peace Pagoda, from which you are treated to magnificent, panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, as well as the adjoining bay of Unawatuna. Dinner and overnight stay at Galle. STILT FISHING is a method that is unique to Sri Lanka, especially on the Southern Coastal belt. The fisherman usually sits on a crossbar called a ‘’petta’’ in the local language which is tied to a vertical pole, that is driven into the sand several meters deep offshore. From this high position, the fisherman proceeds to cast his line and waits patiently till the fish bites. The scenic view of stilt fishermen has proven to be a huge attraction for tourists. Usually, one of the top things to do in Mirissa includes testing out one’s skills at stilt fishing. At sunrise and sunset, the fisherman line up, and the morning session usually goes till 11.30 am as it can get unbearably hot after that. Visitors have the opportunity to climb up on the stilts, try their hand at the activity while having some great photographs captured.
